Our Story
Born From A Mother’s Experience
Our Lady of La Leche Centre was born from a deeply personal experience, a season of unexpected vulnerability and ultimately, a profound encounter with grace.
Following what appeared to be a smooth childbirth experience, our founder encountered the emotional and physical realities of the postpartum period firsthand. The days that followed were marked by severe postpartum blues that took a significant toll mentally and physically. In search of healing and support, she looked for a place in Nigeria intentionally dedicated to postpartum recovery, a nurturing environment where mothers could rest, recover, receive guidance and be cared for holistically. She found none.
That experience revealed a painful but important truth: while significant attention is often given to pregnancy and childbirth, the postpartum period, one of the most vulnerable and transformative stages of motherhood is often navigated in silence and with little structured support.
Yet, in the midst of this difficult season, the founder found deep comfort and strength through the intercession of Our Lady of La Leche, the Blessed Mother lovingly depicted nursing the infant Jesus and long revered as a source of comfort, nourishment and maternal protection for mothers around the world. Through prayer and devotion, she encountered not only solace, but clarity: if the place she needed did not exist, perhaps it needed to be created.
For generations, Nigerian mothers were nurtured through Omugwo – a cherished tradition rooted in rest, nourishment, wisdom and communal care. However, for many modern families, this support system has become increasingly inaccessible due to changing family structures, distance and evolving lifestyles.
What began as a personal experience soon revealed itself to be something far greater. Through countless conversations with friends, family members, first-time mothers, experienced mothers and even women preparing for motherhood, one reality became impossible to ignore: there was a profound and deeply unmet need. Mothers were overwhelmed, unsupported and often expected to navigate recovery with little guidance, while many women longed for a system of care that simply did not exist.
Out of this gap and inspired by a deep devotion to Our Lady of La Leche, our centre was born: the first postpartum recovery centre of its kind in Nigeria, thoughtfully reimagining the warmth of traditional Omugwo through a holistic, medically informed model of care.
Our dedication to Our Lady of La Leche is woven into the very heart of who we are. She is not simply the inspiration behind our name, but the spiritual foundation of our mission – a reminder that mothers deserve to be nourished, supported and tenderly cared for.
Today, we exist to ensure that no mother journeys through postpartum alone, but instead experiences restoration (physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and relationally) through one of life’s most sacred transitions.

FAQs
What exactly is Our Lady of La Leche Centre?
Think of us as a dedicated space for mothers. A premium postpartum recovery and maternal wellness centre designed to support women through pregnancy, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding and early motherhood.
Pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period bring incredible changes - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Our Lady of La Leche Centre was created to support women through these transitions with recovery, wellness, education and community.
We believe that while everyone is focused on the baby, mothers deserve care too.
I've never heard of a postpartum recovery centre before. What is it?
You're not alone, many people haven't.
A postpartum recovery centre is a place designed specifically for mothers to rest, recover and receive support after childbirth. While hospitals focus on delivery and immediate medical care, we focus on helping mothers heal, regain strength, build confidence and navigate early motherhood with the support they need.
Think of it as a modern approach to the care and support traditionally provided through Omugwo, enhanced with professional expertise and wellness services.
Is this only for women who have just had a baby?
While we support women during pregnancy and beyond, our primary focus is mothers in the postpartum period.
The weeks and months following childbirth are often filled with significant physical, emotional, mental and spiritual changes, yet this is also a time when many mothers receive the least support. Our services are intentionally designed to help mothers navigate recovery, breastfeeding, identity shifts, family adjustment and the realities of early motherhood.
Whether you're preparing for birth, adjusting to life with a newborn, navigating breastfeeding challenges, or simply looking for a supportive community, we're here for you.
Is Our Lady of La Leche Centre a hospital?
No.
We are not a hospital or emergency medical facility. Our focus is maternal recovery, wellness, breastfeeding support, education and holistic care. We work alongside healthcare providers and encourage mothers to maintain regular medical care with their doctors. and healthcare teams.
What is an Omugwo House?
At Our Lady of La Leche Centre, we often describe ourselves as a modern Omugwo House.
In many African cultures, particularly in Nigeria, the tradition of Omugwo ensures that a new mother is cared for, nourished, supported and given the opportunity to recover after childbirth.
We are inspired by this beautiful tradition and seek to preserve its essence while complementing it with evidence-based maternal care, wellness services, breastfeeding support, education and community.
Our vision is to create a space where mothers receive the kind of comprehensive care they deserve; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
When is the best time to start receiving support?
Some mothers begin during pregnancy to prepare for birth and the postpartum period. Others seek support immediately after delivery, while some reach out weeks or even months later when they realise they need additional care, guidance, or community.
It's never too early or too late to prioritise your wellbeing.
What services do you offer?

What if I don't have family support nearby?
Many mothers don't.
Whether your family lives far away, you're navigating motherhood on your own, or you simply need additional support, our goal is to ensure you don't have to go through this season alone.
We are building the kind of support system every mother deserves.
Do you provide breastfeeding support?
Yes.

Can my husband, partner or family members be involved?
Yes.
We believe motherhood doesn't happen in isolation. Family support plays a vital role in a mother's wellbeing and recovery.
Selected programmes, educational sessions and family-focused experiences may include spouses, partners, grandparents and other caregivers.
Is this only for first-time mothers?
Not at all.
Every pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey is different. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, every motherhood journey is unique and our services are designed to support mothers at different stages of parenting.
What if I'm struggling emotionally or otherwise after childbirth?
Many women experience feelings of anxiety, sadness, loneliness, or emotional exhaustion after birth. Many mothers experience physical and mental challenges after birth. You do not have to carry any of those alone. Our team is committed to providing a safe space, compassionate support and connecting mothers with appropriate resources and professionals when needed.
Why is family bonding part of your approach?
Because when a mother is supported, the entire family thrives.
Strong family connections can positively impact maternal wellbeing, infant development, breastfeeding success and overall family health. That's why we encourage meaningful involvement from partners and loved ones wherever appropriate.
What does "La Leche" mean?
"La Leche" means "The Milk" in Spanish.
The title "Our Lady of La Leche" refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary nursing the infant Jesus and has long been associated with maternal care, breastfeeding, fertility, motherhood and the nurturing love between mother and child.

Is the centre only for Catholics?
No. We warmly welcome mothers and families of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs.
While Our Lady of La Leche Centre is dedicated to Our Lady of La Leche, a cherished title of the Blessed Virgin Mary that celebrates motherhood, nurturing and the bond between mother and child, our services are open to everyone.

Why was Our Lady of La Leche Centre created?
Our Lady of La Leche Centre was born from a deeply personal experience.
During the founder’s own journey through motherhood, she experienced firsthand both the beauty and the challenges that can accompany pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and postpartum recovery. During this time, she found comfort, strength and hope through the intercession of Our Lady of La Leche.
As she reflected on her own experience and the experiences of many other mothers around her, she became increasingly aware of the gaps in postpartum support available to women and families.
What began as a personal devotion and a desire to help mothers feel seen, supported and cared for eventually grew into a vision: a place where mothers could receive holistic support for their recovery and wellbeing while being surrounded by compassion, community and dignity.
That vision became Our Lady of La Leche Centre.
